My nephew Garn was born 6 weeks premature and my niece Joely was born at 20 weeks.
here is Trista's personal story:
As many of you know, I have personal ties to this event. In December of 2006, I was blessed with the birth of my son, Garin. He was born 6 weeks premature weighing in at a little over 4 lbs. and 16 1/2 inches long. All of the doctors and nurses were so shocked at how strong he was and he thankfully didn't require any special treatments. He is now 16 months old and tips the scales at 22 lbs and is 31 inches tall. He is and will always be our little miracle baby. Last summer we were shocked and overjoyed to find out we were expecting again and due this May. On January 2, 2008 I went for my routine 20 week ultrasound. My mom and I watched in complete awe as we inspected every little inch of my sweet baby. This is when the other shoe dropped. At the end of my ultrasound, they examined my cervix and found that I had silently dialated to 3-4cm. I had emergency surgery in effort to prevent further dilation. On January 3, 2008, I delivered my sleeping angel, Joely Jane. Even in today's modern world, survival of an infant born at 20 weeks is not possible. My hope is that by joining with my friends and family in this walk, we will not only help raise awareness, but hopefully help raise funding so that maybe stories like mine won't have to be told. Thank you for your interest in making a difference.
